Documentary: WINSTON CHURCHILL - THE WILDERNESS YEARS - VOL. 1 - 82230

WINSTON CHURCHILL - THE WILDERNESS YEARS - VOL. 1 - 82230

Episode One – DOWN AND OUT (September 1928 – November 1929)
The last months of 1928: Winston Churchill, maverick politician, holds one of the most powerful posts in Stanley Baldwin’s Conservative Government. But behind the scenes there are ominous signs. Neville Chamberlain and Sam Hoare are trying to oust him from the Prime Minister’s favour and the country at large.
In the spring of 1929, the Tory party loses the general Election and Churchill believes his political career is over. He is fifty-five and nearly broke, he is surrounded by public enemies, he is disillusioned. Seeing no future in Britain, he goes to America with his son, Randolph. He lectures across the States, collecting dollars wherever he speaks, investing enthusiastically, yet recklessly in the stock exchange. He discusses politics with William Randolph Hearst, talks about movies with Marion Davies, and goes to his old friend Bernard Baruch for financial advice. But it comes too late. Wall Street has crashed and with it has gone all Churchill’s hard earned money. Meanwhile, back in Britain, the Toyry shadow Cabinet are preparing to abandon India. Deeply depressed, Churchill comes home.

Episode Two – POLITICS ARE FOUL (October 1930 – March 1932)
The Indian question, largely through Churchill’s campaigning, is becoming a sensation, and it looks as though MacDonald’s Labour Government is reaching the end of its days.
Churchill makes a momentous speech and now has no recourse but to resign from the Shadow Cabinet. Baldwin pledges Tory support to MacDonald, leaving Churchill standing alone, discredited in his own political wilderness.
While in the South of France, Churchill is told that MacDonald is to form a National Government with Baldwin. Surely there will be a Cabinet seat for Winston? After a meeting with Baldwin, Churchill waits for a summons to the Cabinet. It never comes. Yet again he has been tricked.
