Childrens | Cartoons: THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME - SUN9021

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME - SUN9021

Victor Hugo’s epic tale was published in 1831 to enormous public acclaim. In it he almost elevated the Notre Dame Cathedral itself to the status of a character and in so doing strongly encouraged Gothic Revival architecture. In fact, it helped to preserve this Cathedral in its original state.

”Notre Dame de Paris”, as it was named in French, was divided into eleven books, each with suitably Gothic characters whose lives became interwoven as the drama developed. Hugo tackled such themes as obsession and religious fanaticism and with great passion described the poverty and social injustice so prevalent at the time. The modern interpretation, especially where children’s adaptations are concerned, centres on Quasimodo, the hunchback, his struggle against the French society of the time because of his disfigurements and his love for Esmeralda, the gypsy girl.
