FRANK SINATRA – ‘SUDDENLY’
John Baron (Frank Sinatra) is a gangster hired by communists to kill the U.S. President, whose route will take him through the sleepy California town of Suddenly. Baron decides that the best place for and ambush is the Benson household and takes over the house, terrorizing the family of widow Ellie Benson (Nancy Gates). It’s a race against time, with Sheriff Tod Shaw (sterling Hayden) the only man capable of stopping Baron before he gets to the President. Sinatra’s best film after his Oscar-winning performance in From Here To Eternity, the similarities between this work of fiction and the real life events in Dallas, Texas in 1963 were such that Frank Sinatra ordered the film to be withheld from distribution for several years after the assassination of President Kennedy.
DEAN MARTIN – ‘AT WAR WITH THE ARMY’
The first starring vehicle for Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis finds the pair as new recruits in the American army, Martin as 1st Sgt Vic Puccinelli and Lewis as Private First Class Alvin Korwin. Their characters are as far removed as their ranks; Puccinelli is a self-assured romeo whilst Korwin can’t get a thing right, including operating a Coke machine. Despite this, Puccinelli enlists Korwin’s help when he has some girl trouble… Song and dance routines from Dean Martin blend perfectly with the comedy of Jerry Lewis, making this a film for all the family.
SAMMY DAVIS JNR. – ‘GONE WITH THE WEST’
something of a parody of the western movies that had been gone by Clint Eastwood (even down to shooting the cameraman right at the end!), GONE WITH THE WEST stars James Caan as Jud McGraw and Stephanie Powers as Little Moon, with the pair teaming up in search of revenge.
James Caan – Jud McGraw
Stephanie Powers – Little Moon
Aldo Ray – Mimmo, stage robber
Barbara Werle – Billie
Robert Walker Jnr. – Sheriff of Black Miller
Sammy Davis Jnr – Kid Dandy
Heather Angel – Old Little Moon / Narrator
Mike Lane – Shark
Elemore Vincent – Jerry
L. Andy Stone – Old Jud
PETER LAWFORD – ‘ROYAL WEDDING’
Tom and Ellen Bowen are a brother and sister dance act whose show closes in New York. Their agent books them in London for the same period as the Royal Wedding. They travel by ship where Ellen meets and becomes involved with Lord John Brisdale. This causes her to miss a rehearsal. Tom (Fred Astaire) uses the time to dance with a hat rack and gym equipment. Later Tom and Ellen attempt a graceful dance number as the ship rolls. Upon arrival Tom holds auditions and meets Sara. There is much indecision by the siblings about their romantic partners even though they are in-the-clouds. Tom dances on the walls and ceiling of his hotel room. All ends well in this light musical. By the way, there is a vaudeville-style dance number in their show that features slapstick. It’s a hoot!
