MODERN TIMES
In MODERN TIMES, one of Charles Chaplin’s most popular films, The Tramp struggles to live in a modern idustrial society with the help of a young homeless woman, played by Paulette Goddard. The film is both the last of the Tramp Films and the last silent film Chaplin made, and is another masterful piece of drama, social comment and wonderful comedy.

MONSIEUR VERDOUX
Charles Chaplin wrote and directed this oscar-nominated black comedy, in which he plays a family man who supports his wife and child by courting rich widows and murdering them. Eventually he is caught and tried for mass murder. On its release the film found little favour with audiences, who were uneasy with its satirical, anti-war subtext. Later, in light of the popularity of films such as ‘Dr. Strangelove’, Chaplin’s film was re-assessed and is now considered to be one of his best.

CITY LIGHTS
This 1931 silent comedy drama from Charles Chaplin see the Tramp fall in love with a beautiful, blind flower girl, whose family is in financial trouble. When he learns that an operation may restore the girl’s sight, he sets off to earn the money she needs to have surgery. The Tramp’s friendship with a wealthy businessman allows him to be the girl’s benefactor and suitor, but will she fall in love with him even when she discovers that he is not a wealthy duke, but a tramp?

A KING IN NEW YORK
King Shahdov arrives in New York almost bankrupt following a revolution in his own country. To earn some money, the King starts to appear in TV advertisements, and in so doing, meets a child from a communist family. As a result of this contact, he is considered to be a communist and is summoned to appear before the House Committee an Un-American activities… A vicious story harking back to the political subtext of the age and the McCarthyite interrogations before the House Committee. Charles Chaplin shot this biting satire after deciding not to return to the U.S. because of his own problems with the committee.
